4 Steps To Better Facecbook Ad Security

As you know, I take my job as an ad manager very seriously. I’m invested in my client businesses and I want them (and you) to succeed.

You’ve probably already heard some people talking about how they have their accounts being hacked on FB and they’re losing thousands of dollars and the way in is through their ad manager.

This isn’t always the case, but it is something we need to make sure is addressed.

I’m going to give you some very easy steps to follow and I want to make sure you do them. This protects you but will ultimately save you the headache that a friend of mine has been dealing with for the past 6 months. She’s lost $23,000 because of fraud on her FB account and she still can’t get any answers or access to her account.

Please. Let’s work together to make sure this doesn’t happen to any of us.

If you’ve already got one of us as advertiser/editor on your accounts, then don’t worry about Step 1. However, if not, please be advised on the roles involved in your account and who you have assigned inside.

I’ve been doing a lot of research and these action steps will have explanations with them so you know why we’re doing what we’re doing. If we’re working together, you will have already seen this in every email, but if you have someone else running your ads and they’re doing so FROM YOUR ACCOUNT, do this ASAP.

Steps To Strengthening Your Facebook Ad Account Security

Step 1:

1. Please, go into your AD ACCOUNT and change the ad manager/marketer’s role to ADVERTISER. This is a role FB has supplied and/or been rolling out over the last year or so and it will give your manager the access  they need while protecting your payment options, and all of that. Previously, admin was the only role that could see analytics. I’m so glad that’s not the case anymore. The first step is by using ADVERTISER as the role option.

Here are directions to make it easier.
If you have a business account: https://www.facebook.com/business/help/254817222048070

If you use a personal profile account:
Change permissions
Find the Ad Account Roles section.
Find the person whose role you want to update and select Remove User.
In the same section, select Add People and add the same person to your ad account. Choose their new role before you add them.
Select Confirm.

Step 2:

2. The next thing we want to do is make sure and remove any previous ad managers or coaches or consultants. Remove them. They don’t need access to your account. The only people who should be on your ad account as admin is you and advertiser/editor. If there’s someone else on there and I’m working for you, I’ll probably pause ads and wait for them to be removed. This is because I use some private tricks to create your audiences and I’m not keen on sharing those tricks with other managers. Not to mention, again, it’s a SECURITY issue. You don’t need multiple people on your account.

To remove a person from your ad account:

Go to Ads Manager Settings. You may be asked to re-enter your password.
Find the Ad Account Roles section.
Find the person you want to remove and select Remove User.

Remove people from your Business ManagerSteps to remove people from your Business Manager:

  1. Go to Business Settings.
  2. Click Users.
  3. Click People.
  4. Select the person you want to remove.
  5. Click  and click Remove.

If you have a personal account:
If you’re not already there, go to Manage Admins. Once there, click Remove to the right of the personal profiles. Remove the personal profiles.

Step 3:

3. People are sharing audiences for FB ads targeting. This is using AD account IDs. Do NOT do this. First off, you’re sharing audiences that you’re paying for – whether your ad manager is designing them or you’ve been paying for that audience performance over time, you’re paying for them. If I’m running your ads, you need my permission to share these audiences. Second, you seriously are paying for the work behind developing this audience and their engagement. When you share that with another author, you’re giving them stuff that is specific for your work and it will adjust the data inside that audience. We don’t want to do that. All of that to say, what performs well for you, won’t necessarily perform well for them. If you muddy the waters on your engagement, testing could fly out the window. Testing isn’t easy or cheap. Don’t be the one to increase your costs when you don’t need to.
Not to mention, sharing your account information is ANOTHER way hackers can get in. This is all about Facebook ad security, so why do something that’s literally letting the hackers in?
I don’t know about you, but I’m not keen on the idea of having hackers in my account.

Step 4:

Make sure you have SOMEONE added to your account outside of your ad manager that you trust. Have them as editor or admin, but make sure they’re someone you can reach out to in a moment’s notice and that you know will respond immediately.
If someone does access your account without your permission – ie. a hacker, then you can reach out to this person and tell them you got “hacked”. They would then jump into your account and shut crap down. Or at the very least, reach out immediately to FB support to get the review process started. If you’re locked out of your own account, you are severely limited on what you can and can’t do. With someone else in your account, they’re usually not touched by the hackers and your backup can help restore security to your account. I just had this happen with a client and we moved things around and were able to at least secure her payment methods so the hackers couldn’t hijack that part of her account. So she didn’t have to pay anything more than she already owed.
In this day and age, you want to take every step you can to make sure your hard earned money isn’t being pirated. These simple steps can help you secure your accounts.
